Who We Are

San Francisco’s Ocean Beach is the epicenter of Northern California surfing. We are blessed to have this iconic surf spot and beach right on the edge of the city we’ve chosen as our home. OB is rarely crowded and always challenging. Every day this beach and its waves have a different mood–it’s unpredictable and exciting.  It’s everchanging. Partly that’s due to the effects of climate change and sea level rise, and its impact on the ocean floor and the dune ecosystem.  Those environmental changes are among the primary reasons that Upper Great Highway from Sloat Blvd. to Lincoln Blvd must evolve from a roadway to a park.

The majority of San Francisco’s surfing community and Surfrider Foundation prefer an ocean-facing park to an auto thoroughfare and supports Prop K. Ocean Beach Park, also known as Great Highway Park, is a 40-acre oceanfront dune system along Ocean Beach. During the Covid pandemic, the city repurposed it from a city street–it’s actually not a highway–to a beautiful and beloved park. Now this city has a chance to be bold and make a choice for the future: to create a fulltime park for everyone, for our children, and for generations to come. Join us and Surfrider in supporting Prop K for a public space that would give our Ocean Beach the surrounding environment it deserves.  That choice is yours as voters consider Prop K in the November 2024 election.

We Stand For

  • Sea Level Rise Resiliency: Protecting the homes and businesses in the Outer Sunset from rising sea levels and storm surges.

  • Greater Access to Ocean Beach: Ensuring all surfers have easy access to this iconic beach.

  • Common Sense Steps: Implementing measures to protect city infrastructure while minimizing the impact on the near shore bathymetry and sand bars that make Ocean Beach unique.

  • Clear Communication: Addressing misinformation from a small minority of surfers who oppose Ocean Beach Park. We want to make it known that a great majority of SF’s surfers and Surfrider Foundation support the evolution of this space into a full-time 40-acre oceanfront park for all to enjoy. That’s why we and Surfrider urge all San Francisco voters to vote Yes on Prop K in November.

Two different issues!

The proposed seawall question is SEPARATE from Ocean Beach Park (Great Highway Park)

Any concerns of the height of a proposed Seawall at South Sloat have NOTHING to do with the ballot initiative to create Ocean Beach Park. Approving the ballot measure will NOT build a seawall in front of the water treatment plant. Our partners at Surfrider agree that Ocean Beach Park is a necessary, inevitable and positive change for San Francisco and our surf community. Read more here.
